Even though That Sugar Film is 14 years old, I only just heard about it through a podcast. It's available to watch for free on Netflix. I didn’t expect to be shocked by the content, but I was. I was especially surprised to learn that the USA is the obesity capital of the world. After watching, I don’t see myself eating Cheetos, Doritos, or chips again. I had already cut soda from my diet because of my history of kidney stones, but if I hadn’t, this documentary would have been the final push to quit.
I watched the film a couple of weeks ago, and it’s still on my mind. It’s inspired me to take a closer look at the ingredients in the foods I’ve been eating.
Fast forward to this week: I stopped by a small local grocery store that I only visit when I need to grab something on my way home from work, as I drive right past it. As I walked in, I took in my surroundings. Pumpkins were scattered outside the entrance, giving off fall vibes.
Once inside, the first thing I saw were large tubs of cheese balls (the Cheeto kind). Then, of course, there was the Halloween candy display, followed by the bakery section. The chip aisle was also right in view. All of these treats made my mouth water, and for a moment, my stomach tried to convince me that I was hungry. It was tough, but I managed to find the aisle I needed, grab the item I came for, and make it to the checkout without grabbing something out of habit or craving.
It definitely felt like a non-scale victory (NSV) for me!
